If he were a citizen of USA, he could not run for
an Academician position in China per rules of Academy of China. If he is a PR, he should be considered to have abandon his PR by settleing in China unless
he applied for reentry permit which still allow
for maximum 2 years stay outside China.
He could not keep his US postion wioth a H1B visa
either for such a long time
