This is by far the most rational, technical explanation I've seen in the discussions here so far. Admittedly I never know these, I can only tell the difference between /p'/ as in "pee" and /p/ as in "bee". Likewise, to me 北 and "bay" are (seemingly) essentially the same.
If not, does this suggest that Beijing is better spelled as Pei-jing? No?
Also, I can't really tell the difference between "the" and "de" as 的 in Chinese, and "these" and 敌s, when people speak at normal speed. It would be interesting if one could quantitatively identify the nuance in those pronunciations with some mathematical tools.
