Even though the Author are living in US, I don;t think he understands this country very much. Most of his perspections are based on his Chinese experience. His life is probably limited in the circle of Chinese visiting scholars and students, shuffling between Chinese grocery stores and garage sales.
How many american women have you seen who would give up family (husband and kids) for job and live thousands miles away from home? This of course applies to Chinese perfectly.
And I don;t know if there is any American roommate would allow Chinese stir fries everyday in the shared kitchen.
