Both the UK and the US were operating large-scale (largest in the world) tokamaks since the 80's. In fact, JET (UK) and TFTR (US) were two of the first tokamaks in the world to use tritium to produce significant amount of fusion power.

It's reaaaaly curious why these well-known facts weren't mentioned.

BTW, in case people don't know, Q=1 has already been achieved. The next generation reactor, ITER, is shooting for Q=10. For a self-sustaining reactor, we really want Q=infinity for "ignition", but that's probably still a few decades away.
