That is because:
1) They are rich, because they were rich and they are always rich, because they and their ancestors have been controlling industry and trade from the beginning of the industrial age from the heart of early industrial revolution. And we are still living in the industrial age – trade and manufacture are important.
WASPs’ ancestors were the Puritans from England, and they were the Great and Good at that time, in control of new industries, dominated the export/import business and were eager to colonize the New World.
2) WASPs’ ancestors were not happy about the King and the Church of England. To escape persecutions and harassment, they came to settle in New England, aiming to build a new society from scratch. This is why the independence of the USA was not a surprise after all.
When they started to settle down permanently in N. America, it was early 17th century. England was then ruled by Elizabeth I (House of Tudor) and James I (House of Stuart), both are Protestant. The Puritans were in an on-and-off relation with the King and the Church of England. And they finally broke up. Oliver Cromwell was the Puritan military leader during and briefly after the English Civil War (1640).
But the Parliamentarian victory did not change the relation between the Church of England and the Puritans. They still hated each other. Then the Puritans decided to go along. This could explain why in now days the Archbishop of Canterbury does not always welcome ideas from American Fundamentalists.
