Usually, each field is controlled by several big guys. The important thing is to find those "big" names and work with them for several years and get some good data.
Research in America is mostly "expreiment" focused. As long as you work hard and have good data, you have a lot of chances.
There are some Chinese who received professorship in US directly without working as PostDoc with big guys here.
An example is 夏道行. He was a professor at Fudan.
