Liberalism has much longer history than conservatism (which didn't exist late 1960's). Every major social changes in the history of USA has been the work of liberals. Liberalism's root can be traced back to the Industrial revolution era in Europe. Pretty much every other developed country in the West is more liberal than the US. US is truly an exceptional country in this regard.
