Same as people, a nation get rich quickly is not by internally working harder and more efficiently but by capturing and capitalizing external opportunities. For HK, TW and all little tigers dragons or what ever small animals there opportunity if international trade. By being trading nations they get rich almost instantly.
Comparing China to small trading nations makes no sense. China has not been a trading nation until very recently, and such opportunity is much smaller considering the scale and it is diminishing quickly due to geopolitical reasons. Comparing with US makes may be more appropriate. Historically US has not been a trading nation (measured by weight of export in GDP) until mid eighties. But US did capitalize on the two world wars. It would be a sure thing China will get rich very quickly if US, Russia and EU fight a full scale war on their soils and only on their soils.
So what's left to compare are very few countries with large population such as India, Indonessa...
