The Brits did not confront Germans head-to-head in early stage because such time were not mature so that
they smartly maunervired and took advantage of their
naval advantage and strategic bomber forces and traded space for time, and patiently waited for US to come (and they were certain USA would come) and for
Germans to bog down in Russa (they were certain the German would bog down).
As they becamiing second rate power after the war,
it was going to happen anyway because UK was not
big in size.
