Lots of nowadays jobs are either redundant or senseless, but they are real ones filled up by real people. It’s everything, not just economic.

One looks around all over the world, no matter what system, one thing stands out every where:

not enough decent jobs. Just look at America, in this so called good economy and tight job market, below 20 per hr jobs plenty, over? Not much so. In LA months ago school employees went on strike for annual pay under 30k per year, in CA?! Obama said no one having a full job should be deprived of decent life. Well easier said than done.

21 century is the one that can’t just ask people to eat bitterness to take any blood and sweat job, not even in Haiti or Afghan.

Employers can’t just simply say we have to eliminate jobs, at least not employer that get public favors. It should be like carbon neutral policy, if one eliminates a job, they must created another 1 with equal or higher pay.

Go back to your case, it’s government job, even more so, the old position can be eliminated, but affected employee should get trained to take a similar position.

Of course the most crucial point is one I always say：

We need less not more population, not in Japan, China, India, America , Haiti , Bangladesh, nowhere. If one believes all humans are equal, deserves a full life of decency, then we must control population.
