回答: To die for family or nation is not irrational like religion though. 由 Enlighten 于 2005-7-22, 16:53:05:

The human brain is wired so that it can be susceptible to religious feelings. In a hunter-gatherer society when biological human evolution was still ongoing, tribal loyalty was the key to the collective survival. Thus religion emerged and served as an effective means to unite the tribe members under the illusion of a higher cause to fight against outsiders.

In the eyes of a non-believer, it's dying for nothing. But not quite so to people who truly subscribe to the doctrines. In a sense, religious conflict is just an obscure form of tribal confrontation.

Hence the task becomes so challenging for modern society to combat with superstition. It's a legacy that guided our ancestors through the bloody days yet should be let go for future's sake.
