钱钟书在《谈教训》(《写在人生边上》, 一九四一年初版,
一九八三年修订重印)中写道:
"拉罗斯福哥(La Rochefoucauld)《删去的格言》(Maximes
Supprimees)第五八九条里说：‘道学家像赛纳卡(Ｓeneque)
之流，并未能把教训来减少人类的罪恶；只是由教训他人
而增加自己的骄傲。‘"
La Rochefoucauld的法语原文如下:
"Les philosophes, et Seneque surtout, n‘ont point
ote les crimes par leurs preceptes: ils n‘ont fait que
les employer au batiment de l‘orgueil."
["The philosophers, and Seneca above all, have not
eliminated crimes with their precepts: they have only
employed them for the building of pride."]
钱钟书在这么短短的一句话里的胡乱翻译:
把 Les philosophes (The philosophers, 哲学家们)翻译成
"道学家";
把 Les philosophes, et Seneque surtout (The
philosophers, and Seneca above all, 哲学家们，尤其象
赛纳卡)翻译成"道学家像赛纳卡(Ｓeneque)之流";
把 preceptes (precepts, [哲学家的]原则或信条)翻译成
"教训"和"教训他人"。
