news coverage in a timely fashion is very very expensive. Every 30-second report you see on TV or every piece of news you read from the newspaper is backed by a team of people who provide production and logistic support. And the team is backed by a multibillion dollar corporation. It's not like you can just send a couple of reporters to the disaster area and things will automatically happen. The budget and staffing of major Chinese media to cover US is in no where matching even a tiny fraction of CNN and alike. Besides, the death toll so far is only a couple hundred and number of refugees are in tens of thousands. I say ordinary chinese have a lot more things to worry about than that. So it does not make sense to spend a lot of money to cover the story that does not generate wide interests.
