One Must Consider him/herself lucky to see sweat paid off.
Very often, when people speak of their star companies,
they always want to pain a picture that it is due to
their diligence and hard work a company becomes
successful. and implicitly, readers get the hint
that readers have themselves to blame if they don't
consider themselves as successful for they must not
have put in the same effort.
What is often neglected, however, is the fact
that while hardwork, enthusiasm, and intelligent
is necessary, they are not sufficient for a company's
success.
Survival rate of a small start-up is < 5%, note
that is survival rate. People sweats in a start-up,
no question about it. However, results are a key
differentiator. When results are rewarding, like
that with Google employees, hardwork is paid off,
feeding the excitement and expectation that can
lead to even more hardwork.
Such thing does not always happened. There are two not-so-desirable alternatives on the bad side. One is
that people don't see sweat paid off, then after a
while, after several frustrating defeats and
"wasted efforts", people mellow out. Another posibility
is that one becomes successful, earning millions,
then ask oneself "whats in there for me?" then quit
being hard working.
There are people who are always hardworking,
full of enthusiasm, but they are rare.
These kinds of things are very common in the Bay Area.
Eventually, sooner or later, corporates return
must mellow out, and "start performers" return
to average, then the routine begins all over again.
