in the 80s. Few restrictions on changing specialty (ZhuanYe). Small and liberal. Only 800 students a year. About 80 of them have no department at all until the fourth year. Very nice environment for someone truely interested in learning things. Very good grad student to undergrad ratio, so it was easy to hang out with grad student. Truely it was comparable to any good sci/tech college in US. Plus the opportunity to participate in politics.
Well guess that is why BanZhu still reminiscene about it.
