In the early 80s, Beida admission line was much higher than TsingHua. I remember my year, 9 out of the top 10 high-school graduates from Beijing went to Beida, the only one went to FuDan. No one cared about Tsinghua. Only after 6-4, when Beida was punished for being the spearhead, and nobody cared about Math/Physics/Chemistry, Tsinghua took over.
