He was forced to that circumstances leading to his suiciide as Fu Cong had "betrayed" the country. And he was in bad health at that time. It's hard to say whether he can survive the 10-year Cultural Revolution. I can understand his desperation. And I am speculating he suicided also for the sake of protecting Fu Min (at least some protection in his own eyes).
