Major Achievements
Chan is an International known expert in modern electric vehicles, electric drives and power electronics. Over 40 years, Chan has devoted himself to the creative research and development of electric vehicles and advanced motor drives. He has developed the engineering philosophy as well as the approach for system integration and optimization of electric vehicles. He invented several motor drives for electric vehicles and developed high power density, high efficiency motor drives with intelligent energy management. He has been successfully leading a number of major electric vehicle projects in Hong Kong China, USA, Japan and India. He was invited by Oxford University Press to author the book on “Modern Electric Vehicle Technology”, which laid down the fundamentals of modern electric vehicles. He has published over 250 technical papers and 9 books, and holds 10 patents. He was the General Chairman of a number of international conferences and presented many invited keynote papers at major international conferences. He is a Guest Editor of the Transactions of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, USA. He was awarded the IEE (Institution of Electrical Engineers UK) International Lecture Medal in 2000 and delivered his lectures on Electric Vehicles worldwide. He was selected by Asiaweek as the Asia’s Best Technology Pioneer in 2001. He is named as “The Father of Asian Electric Vehicles” by magazine “Global View” in 2003. He is also an honorary professor or visiting professor of a number of well-known universities around the world including MIT, University of California Berkeley, University of Cambridge, etc. He served as an advisor or consultant to leading professional institutions and corporations worldwide. He is a Fellow of the prestige Royal Academy of Engineering, UK, the Academy of Engineering Sciences of Ukraine, Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences, the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers, USA, and the Institution of Electrical Engineers, UK. He is the co-founder and President of World Electric Vehicle Association, the President of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (1999-2000), and the President of the Asian Electric Vehicles Society.
