I know in US, most money is invested in human genetics, even experiment animal projects can get more money than those on agriculture.
However, genetics and breeding play a key role in agriculture, accordding to USDA, more than 50%. To have good animal products, breeds are always in the first place. Nutrition comes next.
You may not know, China is now the largest country on animal production. The guys in China have done many quite good jobs, except most of them didn't have good publishing records.
