回答: A Glass Ceiling for Asian Scientists? 由 xj 于 2005-10-31, 11:19:01:

Yi Rao gave a solid evidence suggesting that Asian scientists were discriminated at the leader level. The refutation from Xie Yu and others are typical examples of bullshitting--trying to confusing readers.

Discrimination has two meanings: perceived discrimination and real discrimination. What Xie said is that he didn't feel discrimination so the discrimination doesn't exist. When confronted with statistics, he dismissed the statistics by saying that "statistics" is sort of "nothing." How could he comment like that? He is a socialogist and a statistician. He had done research on female scientists using statistics. Didn't others give him comments like "statistics" means "nothing?" How did he response to this kind of question? Didn't he know that individual's own experience can't represent the population's experience?

Others pointed out some culture and language barriers which may hinder the advancement of Asian scientists. This may be true. However,
these comments are trying to divert the foci of the problem. There are two things here: are these barriers making Asian scientists difficult to be promoted, or are Asian people unwilling to be leaders? It is unlikely to be the latter. It is more likely that because of the barriers, Asian people find difficult to communicate with others and lost interest to move forward.

It is also likely that others are rejecting Asian people because of those barriers. This is discrimination.

The discrimination exists. Rao Yi's statistics are evidence. If Xie Yu wants to refute Rao Yi's conclusion, why doesn't he provide his own statistics?
