what Liwei's daughter did were multiplication and summation. She found her rule of thumb always worked, but it didn't mean she knew the generalization or the algebra. And in fact, she didn't understand the concept of algebra yet.
When kids learn math, it is very hard for them to grasp the idea of abstract concepts or methods, for example, communality. they know 2+3=5, but found it hard to believe that 3+2=5 too. But they are pretty good at finding rule of thumb. For example, a lot of kids in the first grade can do chess, with very elemental knowledge of summation and subtraction.
But at the age of nine, they are supposed to discover a lot of rules of thumb, although they are not necessary the abstract concept.
