four people died suffering an unknown sickness, and later, it turned out 13 people died with the same symptoms which conined the name Minamata disease caused by mercury poisoning. Till 2001, there were totally 900 died, over two millions had been affected. Without those researchers from kumamoto University, nobody there at Minamata knew their disease were caused by pollution from Chisso Corporation.
I don't know who in China has ever done any research on this topic, perhaps Chinese scholars have been too busy making up publications.
