This has something to do with the chinese obsession with unity and harmony of man and nature, as well as man and society. This obsession leads to a general lack of self-consciousness and a healthy independence among chinese intellectuals. Without a clear sense of self-consciousness, one fails to know himself very well and his relation with nature. This makes him unable to think rationally. It is also difficult for him to generate ideas and concepts with intuition that form the basis of reasoning. In effect, too much emphasis on unity and harmony makes men behave more like social insects in a hierarchical community, instead of independent thinking persons.
