the notion of Xiao (falial piety) should be consistent with other virtues of traditional Chinese ethics, including the respect for social hierarchy, such as the generation gap. therefore, Yang's appeal to Xiao while at the same time marrying a third-generation woman is self-contradictory. the best way to get Yang off the hook (pun NOT intended) is not to appeal to either Chinese or western ethics. just be yourself, dr. Yang and other people will not give a damn to what you did, unless you break the laws.
