When the broadening comes from a collection of molecules of different frequencies and widths, it is called inhomogeneous broadening. When a single molecule or a collection of identical molecules still show a finite line width, it is called homogeneous broadening.
Inhomogeneous broadening leads to Gaussian line shape. Homogeneous broadening leads to Lorentzian line shape.
