When Don Knuth and Steele worked on TeX, Bill Gates was still a kid writing basic compiler. By 1983, when M$ Word was still in its not-very-well-received first release, mathematicians and computer scientists were using TeX/LaTeX for their publications. Don't call yourself "old," you had never been there.
