Among all "the first principle"s, there is non called "the least potential energy principle". Although according to most people's experience, this principle does exit, but it's never been clearly stated, and its meaning varis from case to case.

Most importantly, "the least potential energy principle" actually came from the real "first principle": the second law of Thermodynamics -- upon the requirement of which, the genetic mutation has to be random. If we want to rephrase "the least potential energy principle" in biology, we have to first define a potential. We can define it as the ability of adaptation to the environment. Now we say that a system always move to a state that is adapted to the environment.
