The 80K refer to a person with his/her dependent. You can file seperate return to get around.

If you use "physically present" for foreign income tax exclusion, then you were right. You should not stay in the US for more than a month.

However, if you use "Bona Fide resident" (which only apply to US citizen, not for greencard holder), then it does not matter how long you stay in the US. All you need to do is to calculate the fraction of the 365 days and see how much exclusion you can get.
