Henry Kissinger supposedly once said, “The reason why academic quarrels are so nasty is that the stakes are so small.” The so-called “Climategate” scandal may be an exception, or it may be a harbinger of future conflicts involving science and politics. In this case the stakes could hardly be bigger: a gigantic environmental catastrophe, or not, trillions of dollars, and a huge shift in global political power.
