HMMWV is designed/manufectured by AM General, and company started as a division of AM, and later spinned off as an independent (after AMC failed attempt to sell to Renault which is partly owned by Franch government due to the law). AM General doesn't have the "copyright," since HMMWV was developed under DoD contract. Besides, I read somewhere that DongFeng actually might have bought the design from AM General for HMMWV.
