_________________
Andrew,

I came across your article yesterday on NYT.

This is one similar to yours, but maybe you guys want to talk to each other:

http://www.economist.com/node/17199386

I remember in the US journalism school teaches us about being
objective --- at least, when we write about something, we want to
verify the facts; when we say something involving two parties, we at
least want to have a talk with both, not just one. \\"There is always
another side of the story\\", that is what we learn at Journalistic
Schools.

If you won\\'t mind it, I would suggest one take Fang Shimin and his
folks with a big grain of salt.

Again, do please keep the communications confidential --- I\\'m really
worried about the Chinese people around you who help you do the
research work. Do please not let them see anything I sent you. I am
very, very afraid of these people who are very likely associated with
Fang and his wife, one way or another.

Thanks a lot, and best wishes!

Jimmy

Yes, I know what you mean.
Is there something I should know about Fang Shimin?

I wanted to talk to Xiao but he was in jail.

Andrew,

In the attachments (my writings in Chinese), one of them is to refute
Fang\\'s talks about the transgenic corn finding.

From your article, it seems to me that the Chinese guys who do
research for you are terribly biased to Fang.

What would I say about Fang? Well, I would suggest 2 things.

One best way to understand him, and the stories about his and Xiao
Chaunguo, is to read their articles.

I would suggest a way of reading a foreign language article --- it
works for me: use google translate. The translation usually is poor
and ridiculous and takes a lot of efforts to understand; but it\\'s
worth the time. This is the most reliable way of getting the
first-hand information.

There are even some tricks: for example, I sometimes use google to
translate some Russian into English; and then the same
Russian-&gtGermen-&gtEnglish to compare :-).

In this way I want to get it as first-handedly as possible. I trust
this more than I trust people.

Attached are some of Fang\\'s articles you may want to take look and see
his other sides.

Behind Fang are: China\\'s hydro-power interests; China\\'s transgenic
products interests; and China\\'s media (you know who controls China\\'s
media) . These are interest groups INSIDE the CCP and government
circle that can employ the state machine to smash those in their way.
Fang is nothing but just their attack dog (my subjective opinion).

One may ask : Why Fang was selected? --- a very good question, and
easy to understand if you learn more about him.

Fang was very active in Internet since early 1990s. The Chinese
circle in the States knows him much better.

So, here comes the other best way to know how people think about him:
Search on the websites of reputable universities in the US, find the
tenured faculty members in Biology department (of Chinese origin from
mainland China), contact them, ask them for their opinions about Fang.
Contact at least 20 such people. Then you will have some idea who and
what Fang is.

If you treat Fang as a topic of research project, and you do as I
suggested above, I am sure you will find a lot of interesting things
and you can probably write something that may win you a Pulitzer Prize
:-).

Hope this helps.

Best wishes,

Jimmy

Thanks for the warning and info. I will be super careful when reporting out this story and will not, by any means, rely on Fang. (Although for the academic fraud story we talked to dozens of people but I understand your point... I think he has a serious axe to grind with Dr. Xiao).

Andrew,

I studied your NYT article again. The more I read it, the more I feel Dr. Xiao may have a case against you and NYT.

I would look at this way:

Suppose the whole case were in the States. Suppose everybody involved were in the States.

Would you still write a report like that one? Would not you have a little bit unease about it?

Dr Xiao is a US permanent resident, and he could get to the States and sue NYT for this report. I think he has a case. Read this one:

\\"Wherever the truth may have been, Dr. Xiao was incensed. He filed a string of libel suits against Fang Shimin and told anyone who would listen that revenge would be his.\\"

Though you carefully put \\"Wherever the truth may have been\\" before \\"Dr. Xiao was incensed. \\", you would have to explain \\"told anyone who would listen that revenge would be his.\\" --- where and how did you hear and confirm this. It may be your burden to back it up with firm evidence, which I don\\'t think you have.

Best wishes,

Jimmy

\\"But even more troubling, they said, were assertions that his surgery had an 85 percent success rate. Of more than 100 patients interviewed, they said none reported having been cured of incontinence, with nearly 40 percent saying their health had worsened after the procedure, which involved rerouting a leg nerve to the bladder. (In early trials, doctors in the United States who have done the surgery have found the results to be far more promising.)

Wherever the truth may have been, Dr. Xiao was incensed. He filed a string of libel suits against Fang Shimin and told anyone who would listen that revenge would be his.

This summer both men were brutally attacked on the street in Beijing — Fang Xuanchang by thugs with an iron bar and Fang Shimin by two men wielding pepper spray and a hammer.

When the police arrested Dr. Xiao on Sept. 21, he quickly confessed to hiring the men to carry out the attack, according to the police report. His reason, he said, was vengeance for the revelations he blames for blocking his appointment to the prestigious Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Despite his confession, Dr. Xiao’s employer, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, appeared unwilling to take any action against him. In the statement they released, administrators said they were shocked by news of his arrest but said they would await the outcome of judicial procedures before severing their ties to him.\\"
