Years of diplomatic efforts by both Republican and Democratic administrations have clearly shown that the North Koreans cannot be influenced by threats of being isolated or our statments that we consider their provocations to be disappointing (as we so often do).

They are a major security threat to the US because of the weapons and technology they can sell to our various enemies. North Korea needs to be
neutralized, and that will require strong actions such as:

1) stop all humanitarian aid (and let the Chinese take care of their friends in North Korea)
2) stop all economic cooperation
3) use all means (blocking banking transactions, a naval blockade, and air cargo inspections) to disrupt their export of weapons and technology
4) warn them (and follow through) that any of their acts of hostility will be met with our bombing of their nuclear facilities (and eventually their government buildings if necessary)
5) withdraw our ground troops from South Korea (which should have been done years ago to provide the troops needed in Iraq and Afganistan and to save money)and advise North Korea that any invasion of the south will be met by our full air and missile forces of all types

The North Korean leaders are fighting for survival in their privileged positions. They will only be influenced by real and credible threats to their survival.
