...the information in question, if become public, may compromise an on-going case, in which case the court may be forced to declare a mistrial. There is usually a very good reason for a gag-order, and usually both parties involved in the case agree to it, or they can fight it with the constitution. When the case is over, the gag-order is usually lifted. This is entirely a function of the judicial branch, and nothing to do with the government.
