That is debt. I'm not talking mortgage but credit card debt and student loan debt. In America dirt poor families probably don't carry any debt because no one wants to lend them money and their kids probably don't go to college anyways. But for those near poors, interet + principal payment can make a significant portion of monthly expense. The situation in industrialized Eropean countries is very different: cost of college education is very low and people in general borrow a lot less than Americans do.
But Chinese everywhere don't have a habit of financing daily living expense by borrowing. It's understandable you both overlooked it.
