Gen Stilweel asked the 5th Army to go to India but
The Army commander Du Yuming (Father-in-law of Yang Zhenning) refused because that would be considered
as betrail against Chiang. Only Sun Liren's new 38th
Division followed Gen Stilwell'sa advice and safely
arrived in India.

Du's 5th Army was straned at Mount Wild-Man. And
ironically when they got contact with Chiang,
Chiang this time told them to go to India
so they did. They had 50,000 soliders and
only 10,000 reached India. If Du had followed
Stilwell's advice earlier, 30,000 soldiers
would be alive.

They and the Sun's new 38th Division
became New 1th Army and New 6th Army,
two of Chiang's 5 great main forces
(Others are Zhang Lingpu's 74th Divison,
Du Yuming's 5th Army (different from
those who went to India), and
Huang Wei's 18th Army)
