During WWII, a five-star rank was temporary established, and the rank title is still general of army. Later in 1946, this rank was made permanent. Pershing's rank was General of the Armies of the United States, he was authorized to specify his own insignia, but he chose to wear the four-stars like a full general. Washington was Commander-in-Chief, no rank. Marshal was never used as military rank in the US.
