10 years ago, say, if you want to maintain voice/text communication with others, listen to personal music collection, browse the web on the road, take casual pictures... Well typically you need to carry a cell phone and a two-way pager, (although there were smart phone at that time like Nokia one, but it was quit expensive, more than what iPhone cost today), a MP3 player, a laptop with cell modem link, a consumer digital camera. How much all these things cost? Combining all that, way over $2000.
Today, a smart phone like iPhone, which sets the standard for smartphone, you can do all that with just one device. You don't need to carry a consumer digital camera around anymore. It adds no value. You take a picture with smartphone, manipulate it and upload to facebook or added to your digital album. Why you need to buy a separate device for another couple hundred and only use it once a while?
You think you are smarter than other people? doesn't look like it.
