In 1992, the Chinese national hepatitis seroepidemiological survey found that the prevalence of HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) for the population aged 1–59 years was 9.8% [5]. Furthermore, there was considerable variation in the prevalence of HBsAg carrier between different regions and sexes in China, with the highest rate being found in the mid-south and lower rates being found in northern China. In Zhejiang Province, which is located in the south of China, the prevalence of HBsAg was over 11% [6], which is higher than the national level. Following the recommendations of the World Health Organization, in 1992, China introduced a nationwide control program for HBV infection using a recombinant vaccine. In Zhejiang Province, the vaccination program was implemented well. A population-based study was conducted in 2001 to explore the prevalence of HBV, and the prevalence of HBsAg decreased in 10 years, from 11.7% in 1992 to 5.8% in 2001 [7].
