Want to see preliminary designs for the "signature water feature" being planned for Owensboro's riverfront?

Want to have your say about which design is chosen?

You'll get your chance Thursday.

PRIDE of Owensboro-Daviess County Inc. will host two one-hour sessions -- at noon and 5 p.m. -- Thursday in the RiverPark Center's Experimental Theatre.

Tim Hunter, senior project designer for WET Design of Universal City, Calif., and Teresa Powell, the company's vice president for business and project development, will be there to present three designs for the water feature and answer questions.

"We want a lot of community input," said Ann Kincheloe, chairwoman of PRIDE's community design committee.

"We're keeping the sessions to an hour," she said, "but people can stay and talk later. They (Hunter and Powell) will be at the RiverPark Center from noon to 6 -- or later -- to talk with people."

Hunter and Powell spent three days in Owensboro last month, getting input for the three preliminary designs.

WET Design's portfolio includes two major Las Vegas attractions that are frequently seen on TV and in the movies -- the dancing waters in front of the Bellagio Hotel and the volcano in front of The Mirage.

The company has also created water features for places around the world -- Japan, China, Saudi Arabia, Korea, Portugal -- and smaller communities in the United States, including Scottsdale, Ariz.; Carlsbad, Calif.; and Charlottesville, Va.

All three designs discussed in March include towering plumes of water, shooting to 150 feet in the air and dancing to a musical beat.

The No. 1 priority is a "Wow!" factor, Pat Strehl, senior project manager for Tetra Tech Inc., the company designing the city's new riverwall, told the designers last month.

"This will be Owensboro's version of the St. Louis arch," he said.

Whichever design is chosen is expected to cost between $1 million and $1.5 million. That money will have to be raised from private donations, city officials have said.

The water feature is considered part of the central phase of the riverwall, which will eventually stretch from the RiverPark Center to the Executive Inn's Showroom Lounge.

The city doesn't have the money yet for the central phase of the project. But it plans to start building the section from the RiverPark Center to St. Ann Street this summer.

One of the three designs to be presented Thursday shows several fountains along the Smothers Park bank.

If that design is selected, the fountains could be installed sooner. But Kincheloe said that design would be the most expensive.

The other concepts would see the lighted dancing waters rising from a traditional fountain in the plaza that will be built over the current boat ramp.

The area along the riverfront where the boat ramp is now is scheduled to be filled in and raised to street level.

Ideas for that section include a boardwalk and pedestrian ramps that would take people down to the river level.

The ramp, Hunter said, would be designed to move with the rise and fall of the river.

River water would be pumped up to street level, he said last month, and then cascade back down into the Ohio.

The water eruptions could be constant or timed for shows on the hour or half hour, Hunter said.

The plumes of water, he said, "would glow very vibrantly" and move either "slowly or dynamically," depending on the music.

Each concept includes green space where people could sit and watch the fountains.

Both the cascading water by the pedestrian ramps and the fountains would be allowed to freeze during the winter, Hunter said.

He said whichever design is chosen will "embrace winter,"

WET Design guarantees clients that water features designed for them will never be duplicated anywhere in the world, Powell said.

Kincheloe said the three designs presented Thursday are not final plans.

They can be changed to fit what the community wants, she said.

Light snacks will be available during the noon meeting, Kincheloe said, or people can bring their lunches if they want.
