If the problem is that the supervisor is rude to the students, then just concentrate on the problem. What the hell was the student's compaints trying to say? His supervisor was not professionally qualified, just used students as cheap labor, or had a lover while still being married? Can't you see the student's sickness is much more problematic than his supervisor's rudeness unless you are blind.
How difficult is your research? There are plenty of things a first year grad can help with in the laboratories. It can be more efficient as well. Haven't you heard of learning by doing?
