Comments on the wave mixing scheme of Qiao et al. (2004) Shang-Ping Xie I was made aware of recent postings on Qiao Fangli’s contributions in ocean/climate modeling. As my names were mentioned several times, I felt the need to clarify a few things. The paper mentioned in the postings at www.xys.org (Lin et al. 2006) is led by Dr. Lin Xiaopei of the Ocean University of Qingdao (OUC), a bright young faculty with a lot of independent ideas and a solid track record. I joined the project in summer 2005. It aimed to explain a peculiar subsurface temperature maximum in the central Bohai Sea during summer, a phenomenon we documented from historical hydrographic observations. Lin Xiaopei used the Princeton Ocean Model (POM) to simulate and study this phenomenon. The simulation demonstrates that a seamount anchors the warm water column via intensified tidal mixing. In addition to bathymetry, the use of the Qiao et al. (2004) wave mixing scheme was key to a successful simulation of the warm water column in the central Bohai Sea. Without the Qiao et al. scheme, the mixing is not sufficient for the original POM to simulate the observed, weak thermal stratification in the upper 10 m. This indicates that wave mixing and its representation are very important for the upper Bohai Sea during summer when the winds are calm and not very variable. This model result further led us to examine wave observations from satellite, which confirm a wave-height maximum in the central Bohai. It’s clear that the Qiao et al. wave-mixing scheme helped improve the Bohai simulation during summer, a season when the thermal stratification is strong and wave mixing is important. In reading through the xys postings, I was quite disturbed by some black-or-white characterizations. We all need to be reminded that most things fall under various gray shades between the extremes. I hope my comments offer some facts for us to see the gray shades. Disclosure. My first in-depth scientific discussion with Qiao Fangli took place in Beijing Airport in 2006 summer when we bumped into each other. That was after the Lin et al. paper had been accepted for publication. The Lin et al. paper was not part of the China Seas special section of JGR-Oceans, and none of the authors was affiliated with the First Institute of Oceanography, its teams or projects.
