Wu, M.D., Ph.D. Professor of Medicine Chief, Division of Gastroenterology-Hepatology Herman Lopata Chair in Hepatitis Research University of Connecticut School of Medicine Farmington, CT 06030 Dear Dr. Wu, We have reviewed the report of the UCHC Standing Committee on Alleged Misconduct of Research regarding your involvement in the publication of the article, "An Engineered Multidomain Bactericidal Peptide as a Model for Targeted Antibiotics Against Specific Bacteria" published in Nature Biotechnology 21:12, 1480. While we accept with the committee's finding that there appears to be no credible evidence to support the allegation that you were responsible for the alleged fabrication of data in the article, we are nevertheless concerned by your behavior in accepting a senior authorship role in this work. We believe strongly that authorship should be limited to individuals who have made a meaningful contribution to part, or all, of the studies reported in a paper. Moreover, authors of a paper should be knowledgeable of the techniques used, and the quality of the data obtained. Your involvement, which was apparently limited to assisting in preparing the English translation and related editorial assistance, does not, in our opinion, meet the above criteria for authorship. As a result, we believe that you exercised poor judgment by agreeing to serve as a corresponding author on the paper and, in our opinion, placed your reputation and that of this institution at considerable risk. It is our expectation that for all future publications you will only serve as an author when you have made a meaningful contribution to the study, and can attest to the accuracy and quality of the data included.
