about what your were talking about. GIF uses LZW lossless compression on image, the fine lines in image get preserved. JPEG may loss information for those, therefore, for bitmap icons and graphic details jpeg may not be the best choice. However, both jpeg and gif deal with image files, ie. bitmap files, no drawing program store files in bitmap since it is very ineffiicent. Drawing programs save file in vector format. They may export, i.e. convert the drawing into gif. But it doesn't mean that Drawing program can take a gif and convert back to vector format because that involves too many computer vision stuff. Again, GIF is a lossless compress for image, GNU discoruages using it because patten.
