科学的定义不一定是唯一的，也不是不变的。现代科学的定义因该是包容性的，否则难免会说现代医学不是科学。在现代科学实践中，往往很难把研究和应用分开。 比如外科医生也要从事基础性研究，然后把结果用到临床上。硬要把他的工作分成科学和不科学的两部分就未免太迂腐了。下面是网上看来的不同的定义，仅供参考。
The New York Times reports they are proposing to change the definition of science in Kansas: 'instead of "seeking natural explanations for what we observe around us," the new standards would describe it as a "continuing investigation that uses observation, hypothesis testing, measurement, experimentation, logical argument and theory building to lead to more adequate explanations of natural phenomena."
