The politicains in a democracy can fool people at one time but they can't all the time. Bad decisions fluctuate around good ones in the short term. Ordinary people don't have to make decisions based on all the information concerning the war, but they can just make their own choice according to what they feel. If their sons and daughters in the army were sent back in boxes, they will surely think of the consequences if they don't do anything about the war. There are must be some kind of cost-benefit analysis going in the process.
