it is core value of western culture. It was never recognized by Chinese culture of all time according to chinese history I know of. But that's changing. Even 爱国愤青 have strong desire of choosing life style they want. Human being is a complex creature. Nothing is black and white.
Compare different cultures to see who is "优秀" is a non-starter. If you really want to, try "which one has survived or have the longest history and have increased its population?" Afterall we are all animals.
