Oops, I made it up. OSS is commonly refered as open source software nowadays. But openness is the key to science and any study that is conducted in a scientific manner. It is the constitution for peer reviews and rigorous acquisition of knowledge.
However, this openness is exactly what's been missing and deliberately prohibited in China's educational system. I admire your courage to question.
According to Liang Qi-Chao and Hu Shi etc., many scholars in Qing dynasty already consciously practiced scientific methodologies, although much burdened by harsh politics. So these scientific traditions didn't get a chance to institutionalize. Because the prerequisite is this "openness". And this story continues.
So this negative academic environment really gives Chinese students a disadvantage. But on the other side of Pacific, many kids are deprived of this openness from the church. Man, humans don't really evolve as quickly as they think.
